“Pursue hope like it’s an outlaw.”

March 17, 2014 By Susannah Fox 3 Comments

“Pursue hope like it’s an outlaw.”

– Afternoon Napper during Rare Disease week in Washington, DC

I love that line and that spirit — and this image captured by John Schinker because it looks like these zebras have formed a posse and are heading out on the trail together. When you hear hoofbeats, think “horses” but don’t rule out zebras.* And if you’re a zebra, find your herd — you’ll be happier and maybe even survive longer.

I wonder if anyone’s done a search to find all the health/medical articles containing the word “zebra”? Here’s today’s entry:

What was making her son so sick? A doctor is frustrated by the diagnostic process.

So I’m a little late to the party, I see. But that photo has an interesting story. It was taken in 2009 in Kenya, on a day when I took about 1000 photos. I was playing with the settings on my camera, and accidentally ended up with a couple hundred pictures that were way overexposed. I really liked the composition of this one, so I tried the negative image on a whim. I thought it was cool that the black and white on the zebras just reversed, to they looked normal, walking into a somewhat surreal nightscape. So I just left it like that.

I love it! Thanks so much for finding your way here and telling the story.
